1966 – 1984 – OHV – SHOVELHEAD

The Shovelhead engine appeared in 1966 replacing the veteran Panhead that had served for the E, EL, F and FL Springer, Hydra-Glide, Duo-Glide and Electra-Glide models, from 1948 to 1965. To a large extent, this change was necessary due to the weight gain of the Electra-Glide caused by the passage of 6 to 12 V. in its ignition system.

The first 1,200 cc Shovelhead generated 54 hp in the FL version and 60 hp in the FLH version (high compression), that is, 5 hp more than the Panhead. At the same time he suffered less vibrations and better acceleration.

It was equipped with the Tillorson Diaphragm carburetor which was equipped with a stand for easy cold start. This engine incorporated a new oil pump and a pressure snitch. In 1968, the dynamo and the ignition system were integrated into a new crankcase.

In 1978, the 1,340 cc. (80 cubic inches) Shovelhead engine appeared for the FLH model. In 1980, the V-Fire electronic ignition was incorporated for the Tour Glide model and in 1981 with the V-Fire II. However, at that time, the biggest problems came from unleaded gasoline. In 1984, the Shovelhead was replaced by the entirely new Evolution engine.
